Section One

Salvation and New Birth

1.1 Born of the Spirit. Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came to Jesus by night and made five great observations about Jesus: (1) Nicodemus called Jesus “Rabbi;” and (2) Nicodemus said “we know that You have come from God;” and (3) Nicodemus recognized God sent Jesus as a teacher; and (4) Nicodemus observed that no one can do the signs Jesus did; and (5) Nicodemus knew that God was with Jesus (John 3:2). Even with all that knowledge about Jesus, Nicodemus was not going to see the kingdom of God, unless he was born from above. 1Jesus used the phrase “γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν” to describe born from above. Jesus contrasted birth out of the flesh with birth  out of the Spirit. Jesus said: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6).  2The Greek text provides: τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς σάρξ ἐστιν, καὶ τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος πνεῦμά ἐστιν.” Jesus used the perfect passive participle γεγεννημένον to convey the idea that you were born one way and you became what you were born (flesh first, later believers become spirit). Jesus explained that  flesh was born of out the flesh, meaning they came from a woman’s womb. Every human being, except Adam (Genesis 2:7), was born out of the flesh, including Jesus (Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 2:14). Every one born of the flesh, except Jesus, was also born in sin, because sin passed down from Adam to the entire human race (Romans 5:12-14; Psalm 51:5). At the moment of salvation, the believer is born from above, meaning they have been born out of the Spirit and are now spirit.  Unbelievers do not know where everyone born of the Spirit comes from or where they are going (John 3:8). 3 John wrote: “τὸ πνεῦμα ὅπου θέλει πνεῖ καὶ τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ ἀκούεις, ἀλλ’ οὐκ οἶδας πόθεν ἔρχεται καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγει· οὕτως ἐστὶν πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος–notice the perfect passive participle γεγεννημένος again.”

 ♦ Every person has been born of the flesh.

Unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Every believer was first born of the flesh and has become flesh; at the moment of salvation, every believer was born of the Spirit and has become spirit.

Unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Salvation and Born of God

1.2 Born of God. John also wrote: “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God (John 3:9). 4John wrote: “Πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἁμαρτίαν οὐ ποιεῖ, ὅτι σπέρμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ μένει, καὶ οὐ δύναται ἁμαρτάνειν, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ γεγέννηται–notice the perfect passive participle γεγεννημένος here as in John 3:36 and also the perfect passive infinitive γεγέννηται“.  Likewise, if anyone is in Christ, new creation; the old things–he has passed by; behold, new things–he has become (2 Corinthians 5:17; see also John 1:13). 5Paul wrote: “ὥστε εἴ τις ἐν Χριστῷ, καινὴ κτίσις· τὰ ἀρχαῖα παρῆλθεν, ἰδοὺ γέγονεν καινά.” In my mind, we must keep the sense of the singular verbs associated with nominative plurals, posing serious issues for translation. In my translation, I tried to resolve the issue of the singular verbs and plural nominatives by using a dash, but the translation requires more work. Please take notice that all the new creation has passed by old things and the new creation has become new things.

Section Three

Salvation and Regeneration

1.3 Regeneration. At the moment of salvation, believers are no longer fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, homosexuals, thieves, covetous, drunkards, or revilers, because we were washed and sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). 6Paul wrote: Ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἄδικοι θεοῦ βασιλείαν οὐ κληρονομήσουσιν; μὴ πλανᾶσθε· οὔτε πόρνοι οὔτε εἰδωλολάτραι οὔτε μοιχοὶ οὔτε μαλακοὶ οὔτε ἀρσενοκοῖται οὔτε κλέπται οὔτε πλεονέκται, οὐ μέθυσοι, οὐ λοίδοροι, οὐχ ἅρπαγες βασιλείαν θεοῦ κληρονομήσουσιν. καὶ ταῦτά τινες ἦτε· ἀλλ’ ἀπελούσασθε, ἀλλ’ ἡγιάσθητε, ἀλλ’ ἐδικαιώθητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Believers are saved according to the mercy of God, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). 7Paul wrote: “οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἔσωσεν ἡμᾶς διὰ λουτροῦ παλιγγενεσίας καὶ ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου. This renewing by the Holy Spirit continues during the lifetime of the believer (Colossians 3:10 (new self); 2 Corinthians 4:16 (inner man); Romans 12:2 (mind). 

At the moment of salvation, believers are no longer fornicators, adulterers, effeminate, homosexuals, thieves, covetous, drunkards or revilers. 

At the moment of salvation, believers were washed and sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

At the moment of salvation, believers have been saved by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

This renewing by the Holy Spirit continues during the lifetime of the believer in the new self, in the inner man and in the mind.

Salvation and the New Reasoning

At the moment of salvation, our reasoning is changed, because God opens our heart (Ephesians 4:18; Colossians 1:21; Hebrews 8:10). Before we were born from above, we were in nature children of wrath, and we did  the will (“θελήματα”) of the flesh (“σαρκὸς”) and of the reasonings (“διανοιῶν”) (Ephesians 2:3). We walked in the futility of our minds, being darkened (“ἐσκοτωμένοι”) in their reasoning (“διανοίᾳ”) (Ephesians 4:8).  We were also hostile to God in our reasoning (Hebrews 8:10). Peter wrote that we should gird up the loins of our reasoning, being completely sober (1 Peter 1:13).  As believers, we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us reasoning (“διάνοιαν”), so that we may know Him Who is true (1 John 5:20).

Salvation and Understanding

As unbelievers, we did not  hear (“ἀκούουσιν”) nor understand (“συνίουσιν”) (Matthew 13:1314).  People must understand (“συνῶσιν”) in their heart to return to the Lord, and He would heal them (Matthew 13:15Mark 4:12Acts 28:26-27). Some unbelievers hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and do not understand (“συνιέντος”) it, the evil one comes and snatches away the seed sown in the heart. But for believers, that seed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ sown in their heart bears spiritual fruit to salvation. Salvation involves gaining understanding of the spiritual words of Jesus Christ, which are the words of eternal life (John 6:68). Jesus opens our minds to understand (“συνιέναι”) the Scriptures, for they testify of Jesus. Believers are no longer unthinking (“ἄφρονες”), but understand (“συνίετε”) the will of the Lord (Ephesians 5:17).

Section Four

Salvation and Fellowshippers of the Divine Nature

2.1 Fellowshippers of the Divine Nature. God granted to believers His precious and magnificent promises, so that believers become fellowshippers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4; see also John 6:68) . 8Peter wrote: “δι’ ὧν τὰ τίμια καὶ μέγιστα ἡμῖν ἐπαγγέλματα δεδώρηται, ἵνα διὰ τούτων γένησθε θείας κοινωνοὶ φύσεως ἀποφυγόντες τῆς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἐν ἐπιθυμίᾳ φθορᾶς“. The term “fellowshippers” means to become an active participant in doing something, like murder (Matthew 23:30), or  business partners like James, John and Simon Peter (Luke 5:10), or spiritually sharing an altar with idolaters (1 Corinthians 1:18), or sharing suffering and comfort (2 Corinthians 1:7; Hebrews 10:33). Through God’s precious and magnificent promises, believers have become fellowshippers of the divine nature. Therefore to be a fellowshipper with the divine nature means that believers (1) actively participate in God’s activities; and (2) have joined God in purpose; and (3) have a spiritual union with God including emotional attachments. The “divine nature” here stands in contrast to the unbelievers who are children of wrath by nature (Ephesians 2:3). 9Paul wrote: “ἐν οἷς καὶ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἀνεστράφημέν ποτε ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις τῆς σαρκὸς ἡμῶν ποιοῦντες τὰ θελήματα τῆς σαρκὸς καὶ τῶν διανοιῶν, καὶ ἤμεθα τέκνα φύσει ὀργῆς ὡς καὶ οἱ λοιποί.” Because believers have become fellowshippers with the divine nature, believers have escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. 

At the moment of salvation, believers become fellowshippers of the divine nature.

As felllowshippers of the divine nature, believers actively participate in God’s activities.

As felllowshippers of the divine nature, believers have joined God in His purposes.

As felllowshippers of the divine nature, believers have a spiritual union with God, including emotional attachments.

As felllowshippers of the divine nature, believers have escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

As felllowshippers of the divine nature, believers are no longer children of wrath by nature, like the unsaved world  (Ephesians 2:3).

Salvation and Make Alive

5.1 Make Alive. Jesus taught that the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, and the Son also makes alive whomever He wills (John 5:21). 10John wrote: “ὥσπερ γὰρ ὁ πατὴρ ἐγείρει τοὺς νεκροὺς καὶ ζῳοποιεῖ, οὕτως καὶ ὁ υἱὸς οὓς θέλει ζῳοποιεῖ. At the moment of salvation, Jesus makes alive the believer. Jesus also died, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit (1 Peter 3:18). 11Peter wrote: “θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκί,  ζῳοποιηθεὶς δὲ πνεύματι.. Likewise, as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive (1 Corinthians 15;22). 12Paul wrote: “ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ πάντες ζῳοποιηθήσονται. This term “makes alive” describes a dramatic change in the believer at the moment of salvation. At the moment of salvation, believers become servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit makes alive (2 Corinthians 3:6). 13Paul wrote: ὃς καὶ ἱκάνωσεν ἡμᾶς διακόνους καινῆς διαθήκης, οὐ γράμματος ἀλλὰ πνεύματος· τὸ γὰρ γράμμα ἀποκτέννει, τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα ζῳοποιεῖ. See also the seed that dies, and then makes alive (1 Corinthians 15:36). In contrast, the Law was never able to make alive anyone (Galatians 3:21) 14Paul wrote: “ὁ οὖν νόμος κατὰ τῶν ἐπαγγελιῶν [τοῦ θεοῦ]; μὴ γένοιτο. εἰ γὰρ ἐδόθη νόμος ὁ δυνάμενος ζῳοποιῆσαι, ὄντως ἐκ νόμου ἂν ἦν ἡ δικαιοσύνη.” God the Father will also makes alive the believer’s mortal bodies through the Holy Spirit who indwells them (Romans 8:11). 15Paul wrote: “εἰ δὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ ἐγείραντος τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐκ νεκρῶν οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν, ὁ ἐγείρας Χριστὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ζῳοποιήσει καὶ τὰ θνητὰ σώματα ὑμῶν διὰ τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος αὐτοῦ πνεύματος ἐν ὑμῖν.’ The Spirit is the One Who makes alive, the flesh profits nothing (John 6:63). 16John wrote: “τὸ πνεῦμά ἐστιν τὸ ζῳοποιοῦν, ἡ σὰρξ οὐκ ὠφελεῖ οὐδέν· τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἐγὼ λελάληκα ὑμῖν πνεῦμά ἐστιν καὶ ζωή ἐστιν.” Paul explained that the first man, Adam, became a living soul (1 Corinthians 15:45). 17Paul wrote: “ἐγένετο ὁ πρῶτος ἄνθρωπος Ἀδὰμ εἰς ψυχὴν ζῶσαν. Paul continued: “but the last Adam (Jesus) became a life making Spirit” (1 Corinthians 15:45). 18Paul wrote: “ὁ ἔσχατος Ἀδὰμ εἰς πνεῦμα ζῳοποιοῦν. Paul then emphasized that the descendants of Adam are earthly, but the offspring of God are heavenly because Jesus is heavenly; so believers bear the image of the earthly, but afterwards they will bear the image of the heavenly (1 Corinthians 15:45-49).  Notice that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all make alive believers. 

 

Section Six

Salvation and Spirit Life

6.1 Spirit Life Paul wrote about the effects upon the believer’s body and spirit because of Christ in them. If Christ is in you, then the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit life because of righteousness. 19Paul wrote: εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν, τὸ μὲν σῶμα νεκρὸν διὰ ἁμαρτίαν τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα ζωὴ διὰ δικαιοσύνην. Notice that Paul used the nominative adjective “νεκρὸν” to modify σῶμα. Then Paul used two nouns in contrast: πνεῦμα ζωὴ. The contrast here is between (1)  the body is dead because of sin and (2) the spirit is life because of righteousness. Paul then continued with “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you” (Romans 8:11). 20εἰ δὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ ἐγείραντος τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐκ νεκρῶν οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν, ὁ ἐγείρας Χριστὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ζῳοποιήσει καὶ τὰ θνητὰ σώματα ὑμῶν διὰ τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος αὐτοῦ πνεύματος ἐν ὑμῖν.   The flow of Romans 8 concerns Christ changing believers. Particularly, because of Christ in believers, the Holy Spirit delivers believers from the requirements of the Law and frees believers from control by the flesh. Therefore, believers are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, Who indwells them. 21Paul wrote: “Ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σαρκὶ ἀλλ’ ἐν πνεύματι, εἴπερ πνεῦμα θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν. Because of the contrast of body and spirit within believers, I translated Romans 8:10 as spirit life, and not the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Paul has contrasted the Spirit with the flesh, but then changed his focus in Romans 8:10 to the contrast within the believer between the flesh and spirit. 

3.1 Made Alive in Spirit. Peter wrote: “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” (1 Peter 3:18). 22Peter wrote: “ὅτι καὶ Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων, ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ θεῷ θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκί, ζῳοποιηθεὶς δὲ πνεύματι.”

Because of Christ  in believers, their bodies remain dead. 

Because Christ in believers, the spirit life because of righteousness.

♦ Salvation has no effect upon the physical body, but righteousness brings life to the spirit.

Salvation and Spirit and Flesh

4.1The Spirit and Flesh. Before we can understand how salvation affects the spirit and the flesh, we must first understand the difference between the terms “body” and “flesh” in the New Testament. 23The term “body” (σῶμα”) must be distinguished from “flesh” (“σὰρξ”). The terms body and flesh must be distinguished in the New Testament.Jesus commanded His disciples to watch and pray as He prayed nearby. They fell asleep. Jesus returned and said to them: “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is eager, but the flesh is weak”(Matthew 26:41; Mark 14:38). 24Matthew wrote: “γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής.” Matthew used the word “πρόθυμον,” which generally means eagerness ( 2 Corinthians 8:11 (eagerness to will the giving); 2 Corinthians 8:12 (eagerness to give); 2 Corinthians 8:19 (show our eagerness to work); 9:2 (I know your eagerness to give); Acts 17:11 (searched the Scriptures with great eagerness); Romans 1:15 (eager to preach); 1 Peter 5:2 (shepherd the flock with eagerness). Jesus distinguished the will from the spirit. Remember that Jesus said that which is born of flesh is flesh (John 3:6). Jesus also said that He would give His flesh for life of the world (John 6:51). 25John wrote: “ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἄρτος ὁ ζῶν ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς· ἐάν τις φάγῃ ἐκ τούτου τοῦ ἄρτου ζήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ ὁ ἄρτος δὲ ὃν ἐγὼ δώσω ἡ σάρξ μού ἐστιν ὑπὲρ τῆς τοῦ κόσμου ζωῆς. Jesus also contrasted the flesh with the spirit: “ It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” (John 6:63). 26John wrote: “τὸ πνεῦμά ἐστιν τὸ ζῳοποιοῦν, ἡ σὰρξ οὐκ ὠφελεῖ οὐδέν· τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἐγὼ λελάληκα ὑμῖν πνεῦμά ἐστιν καὶ ζωή ἐστιν.” 

The spirit and the flesh are different things.

The spirit was eager to pray.

The flesh was weak and sought sleep.

The flesh (your body) was not concerned about prayer, but the spirit was.

You may know what the power of the flesh feels like when you fall asleep while eager to pray.

The Spirit makes life in the spirit of a man, not in the flesh of the man.

At  the moment of salvation, your spirit becomes alive, but your flesh remains the same.

The words of Jesus Christ are spirit.

The Holy Spirit takes the spirit words of Jesus and makes life in the spirit of man through the spirit words (The Gospel) of Jesus Christ.

Before the spirit words of Jesus make life in the spirit of man, that man was dead because he lived out of the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience, who live in the lusts of their flesh, and indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind.

Salvation and the Body

 

Body of Sin. According to Paul, our old man was crucified with Him (“ὁ παλαιὸς ἡμῶν ἄνθρωπος συνεσταυρώθη”), that our body of sin may be done away with (“καταργηθῇ τὸ σῶμα τῆς ἁμαρτίας”), so that we would no longer be slaves of sin (Romans 6:6). Paul used figurative language about our human bodies. He explained that we were crucified with Christ, and because our bodies were crucified with Jesus, we are no longer slaves to sin (“τοῦ μηκέτι δουλεύειν ἡμᾶς τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ”). Because Christ was raised bodily from the dead, death no loner is master over Him. Jesus died to sin once for all. So, God commands us to consider ourselves dead to sin, but alive to God (Romans 6:1-12). Therefore, we do not let sin reign in our mortal body. The body produces lusts, and we must choose to obey the lusts of our bodies or not.  We must no continue to present our bodies to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but as we must present our members of the body to God as instruments of righteousness.  Sin is no longer master over us, for we are not under the Law, but under grace.
