Introduction

The New Testament writers used various words to describe the different spiritual parts of a person. In this article, we will explore the term “νοός,” which I will translate as mind. At times, I will translate the verbs and participle related to “νοός” as mind or minding, giving them new meaning for the purposes of Exegetical Psychology. Because the words of the Bible were chosen by God, I prefer to translate words using similar English words. I have chosen a few examples from the New Testament to show how the mind fits into Exegetical Psychology.

Verbal Use of Mind

  1. Mind the Facts. Jesus asked His disciples: “Do you not mind (“οὐ νοεῖτε”) that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?” (Mathew 15:17). Jesus taught His disciples that they must mind that what goes into the mouth and then into the stomach does not defile a man (Matthew 15:7). Jesus trained the disciples to use the mind to evaluate facts from a spiritual perspective to arrive at spiritual understanding.  Proper minding leads to understanding
  2. Mind the Warnings of Jesus.  As the disciples came to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, they had forgotten to bring bread. Jesus aid to them: “Beware of the leaven of he Pharisees and Sadducees.” They began to question among themselves why Jesus was talking about bread, thinking He was referring to the physical bread they had forgotten to bring. Knowing their discussion, Jesus asked His disciples: “How do you not mind (“πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε “) that I did not speak to you concerning bread?” (Matthew 16:11).  Jesus said that they must mind to understand He was not talking about physical bread. Jesus trained to His disciples to use their mind to understand the evil of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus questioned them about why they did not mind what He had said. The disciples were anxious about bread, but Jesus was teaching them about spiritual leaven, training them to mind the facts to understand spiritual truth. Therefore, for the purposes of Exegetical Psychology, believers must mind the facts around them to understand the evil promoted by evil people, like physical leaven spreading through physical dough. Minding remains essential to understanding the spiritual truths taught by Jesus. We must mind the words of Jesus to understand the spiritual truth He taught.
  3. Mind the Scriptures. Jesus also said that His disciples must mind (“νοείτω”) as they read the Scriptures, citing Daniel’s description of the Abomination of Desolation. Once the disciples mind what Daniel wrote, then when they see the Abomination of Desolation, they know to flee to the mountains (Matthew 24:15). Jesus continued to train the disciples to mind properly. They must mind the Scriptures. The disciples of Jesus must mind the words of the prophets and understand the spiritual truths of Scripture. By minding the Scriptures, they could understand the spiritual truth from the Scriptures about the Abomination of Desolation, so that they may take appropriate action.
  4. Mind and Understand. Jesus compared and contrasted the terms “mind” and “understand” when He was talking to His disciples about the defilement. Jesus gave the crowd a parable about what defiles a man. The disciples asked Him about the meaning of the parable. Jesus said to them: are you ones not understanding (“ἀσύνετοί”–adjective as substantive plural)? Jesus then explained that they were ones not understanding the parable because they did not mind (“νοεῖτε”–present active indicative) the facts.  Jesus also related a hard heart to the ability to mind and understand. Jesus commanded the crowd to listen (“Ἀκούσατέ”) to Him and understand (“σύνετε”) (Mark 7:14).  Please notice the relationship of terms here. Jesus linked the command to hear with the command to understand. Hearing first, then understand what you have heard. The term “understand” (“σύνετε”) always refers to spiritual understanding in the New Testament (see The Use of the Term “συνιέναι” in the New Testament.) Having issued those commands, Jesus then explained to the crowd that nothing outside the man can defile (“κοινῶσα”) the man. The things which proceed out of the man defile the man (Mark 7:15). The disciples then questioned Jesus about the parable and He said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also?”. Jesus declared that out of the heart (“τῆς καρδίας”) of man proceed evil reasonings (“διαλογισμοὶ”–see reasonings. ) and all kinds of sinful actions (Mark 7:21-22).
